Insect Molecular Genetics

200,000 species of Lepidopteran insects possess more than 70% of Agriculture and Forestry pests, including the silkworm (Bombyx mori) which is a representative model insect with economic importance. Our group focuses on establishment insect genetic manipulation platform which will be used for exploration of insect sex determination and regulation mechanism, improving the silk quality and developing the environmentally friendly pest management method. Our researches include: (1) insect sexual and developmental regulation; (2) application of insect transgenesis and genome editing techniques; (3) genetic regulation of lepidopteran pests.

Research Progress:

  1. Development of precise genetic manipulation tools including piggyBac-based transgenesis and CRISPR/Cas9-based genome editing in lepidopteran insects.
  2. Construction of the genetic sexing system in the silkworm, Bombyx mori.
  3. Functional analysis of insect microRNAs and development-related genes in B. mori.
  4. Genetic regulation research in lepidopteran pests.
