Systematic Entomology

The laboratory mainly contribute to the taxonomy, origin, phylogenetic evolution, inter-relationships of the three groups of basal hexapods (Protura, Collembola and Diplura), as well as the phylogenetic relationships of basal hexapods with pterygote insects and other arthropods.

Classification and Systematics of Isotomidae (Collembola)
This study investigated the diversity, distribution and phylogeny of Chinese Isotomidae. Through searching and reading all references about the taxonomy of Chinese Isotomidae up to 2008, we have found 70 species of Isotomidae belong to 28 genera that distributed in 17 provinces of China. An updated list for Chinese Isotomidae was also presented. By sorting the Isotomidae collections deposited in our laboratory and indentifying specimens after mounting, we have ascertained 60 species of Isotomidae belong to 30 genera, including 8 new record genera, 10 new record species to China, together with several new species.

Spermatogenesis of Acerentomon Microrhinus (Protura: Acerentomidae)
This study investigated the spermatogenesis of Acerentomon Microrhinus. During the spermatogenesis of A. Microrhinus, we have ascertained that primary spermatocytes have synaptonemal complexes. Both centrioles in spermatocytes composed of 14 doublets. At the end of first meiosis, secondary spermatocytes and the spermatids were formed. During this process the nucleus condenses its chromatin in such a way that dense thick rods are located at the periphery of nucleus and then they occupy the whole nuclear volume. The nucleus adheres to the initial part of the axoneme (basal body or centriole) where a dense material surrounds the centriole. Here a layer of microtubules disposed in helicoidal fashion produces the helical array of the nucleus around the axoneme. The winding fashion of sperm in Protura is different from that in Collembola, which indicates an evolutionary divergence between two groups.

A New Species of Anisentomon from Hainan, Southern China (Protura: Eosentomidae)
The present study described a new species of genus Anisentomon Yin, 1977 found in Hainan Province named as A. hainanense. This species is characterized by one pair of curved spines on urotergite X in the position of setae A1, by the presence of four anterior setae on urosternites IV–VII and six setae on urosternites IX–X. The genus Anisentomon is endemic to China. It is characterized by a pair of large spines on urotergites X or XI and by the absence of sensillum e on the foretarsus. The spines were compared in this study and an updated key to the five species of Anisentomon was also presented.
