The Research Center for Insect Sciences (RCIS) was founded in Shanghai Institute of Plant Physiology and Ecology (SIPPE) in May, 2007. Currently, there are one academician, seven full professors and 3 associate professors plus more than 40 graduate students and post-docs at RCIS. During the past few years, the scientists at RCIS have been involving in the research programs from Ministry of Sciences and Technology (973 and 863 programs), National Natural Sciences Foundation, CAS etc. A series of high impact papers have been published by RCIS members on the journals of Cell, Science, Nature Biotechnology, Molecular Cell, PNAS, Genes & Development, Genetics, JBC etc.
The researches conducted at RCIS are mainly focused on genomics and functional genomics studies of insects, primarily the Bombyx mori and Drosophila melanogaster. The main mission of RCIS is to reveal at molecular level the complexes of insect systematics, development and the interactions between insects and insects as well as the interactions between insects and other organisms. The knowledge acquired can be used for innovative insect pest managements and effective use of beneficial insects. In addition, RCIS will work together with the Shanghai Entomological Museum to train and educate graduates for advanced insect sciences, and to spread and broaden insect knowledge for general audience.
The director of RCIS is Prof. Yong-Ping Huang, and the vice director is Prof. Cheng-Shu Wang. The Chairman of RCIS academic committee is Prof. Le Kang.
