The Laboratory of Photosynthesis and Environmental Biology was set up from the former two laboratories of photosynthesis and environmental biology in 2008. Currently, the laboratory has 8 groups, 31 researchers including two academicians (Jiao-Nai Shi and Yun-Gang Shen), and 29 graduate students. The long-term of the Lab is to provide plant breeders with genetic resource and technology to improve yield and food quality.
The undergoing projects include: structure and function of ATP synthase and its related molecular mechanism of energy transformation; response and adaptation of photosynthesis to environmental changes; regulation of photosynthetic efficiency; molecular mechanism of photo-inhibition in natural conditions, molecular structure of NADPH dehydrogenase and its relationship with respiration of chloroplasts and cyclic electron transport; molecular structure and regulatory mechanism of major enzymes in carbon metabolism, such as Rubisco and PEPcase; analysis of photosynthetic population and its relationship to yield; the regulatory function of proton motive force in the operation of photosynthetic apparatus; molecular basis for chloroplast development; raising photosynthetic efficiency in breeding of high-yield wheat; plant growth and development, improvement of the resistance to abiotic stress and crop yield; the development of techniques related to plant proteomic study, plant tissue culture, space biology and study and application of controlled agriculture. The laboratory is equipped with a series of instruments including ultra centrifuge, HPLC, GC-MS, capillary electrophoresis, IPGphore, different kind of microscopes and special instruments for space cell electrofusion.
The Laboratory is composed of eight groups. The group leaders and their research interests are as the followings:
